Introduction to Prepress

Saddle Stitched

To bind by stapling sheets together where they fold at the spine, as compared to Side Stitched.

Perfect Bound

To bind sheets that have been ground at the spine and are held to the cover by glue.

Case Bound

To bind using thread-sewn & glue to hold signatures to a case made of binder board covered with fabric, plastic or leather. Also called cloth bind, edition bind, hard bind and hard cover.

Smythe Sewn

To bind sheets that have been sewn at the spine and are held to the cover by glue.

Wire-O Bound

To bind using wire. Wire-O sets the standard for mechanical binding excellence because it lies flat, opens 360 degrees, is great for crossover images because it has no "step-up," unlike spiral wire and plastic coil. Wire-O is available in many standard colors.
